Reciprocal Teaching:
Throughout the year, students will be involved in Reciprocal Teaching groups made up of 5-6 students. This is an opportunity for students to read a common book outside of class and come together and share their higher-level thinking. Jobs and guidelines contribute to the development of the conversation and expectations are very clear.
Important: It is important to know that your child is borrowing a book from the classroom for Reciprocal Teaching. They are expected to take care of the book and return it in the state in which they received it. Each book will be signed out and will be signed in when they are finished. Any lost or destroyed books will need to be replaced for future groups and classes.
Your child will sign the following contract regarding Reciprocal Teaching:
This year you will be working in Reciprocal Teaching reading groups. This is an opportunity for you and your group to lead meaningful conversations about different assigned texts by questioning, predicting, summarizing and clarifying.
You will be given a different job each day: Questioner, Summarizer, Predictor, Clarifier or Recorder. It is very important that you come prepared to group each day, ready to do your job.
You will be borrowing books from the classroom that have been purchased by the school, the PTO and your teacher. It is important that you use and return the books in the condition that they were given to you.
Below, please check off that you agree to the terms of being part of a Reciprocal Teaching group and sign. Also, please have your parents read and sign the contract.
I will come prepared each day, ready to participate in my reciprocal teaching group, by reading the assigned chapters.
I will take care of the books leant to me from the classroom, and return them in the condition they were originally in. If a book is lost or destroyed, I will do what I can do to replace it.
